First off, I must say thank you to everyone who read or reached out or otherwise offered support following my previous post. It can be hard to share such personal reflections with the world, but you all made me feel welcomed and loved. So again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This week I have new news to share with you: specifically that I’m going to be jumping into a whirlwind of activity starting this very weekend, and I wanted to make sure that you knew about it.
With my tree identification book The Trees Around You: How to Identify Common Neighborhood Trees of the Pacific Northwest now available for pre-order, I’m gearing up to get the word out as much as possible. This is my pride and joy, and I am almost literally counting the days until it’s out. (Which as of right now is 151 days, just in case you didn’t think I was serious.) I’ll be touring the Pacific Northwest this summer teaching some tree identification courses through the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture and we’ll be exploring the basics of tree ID, and putting some of the techniques and tricks I included in the book into action, like the Stepwise Journey.
Spots will fill up quickly for these workshops, so sign up now. Though it’s put on by the PNW-ISA, our local arborist’s association, these courses are meant as an introduction to cover the basics and set you up for success in diving deeper into tree ID. So anyone can sign up and I promise it will not be over your head! It will also be a great primer for making the most of The Trees Around You as you’ll know exactly how to navigate the book.
Basic Tree ID - Principles, Methods and Practice
I’ll also be doing a few walks around Portland in the meantime, so keep your eyes open for those on my Instagram and website. I’m scheduling some Hoyt Arboretum walks and few around town walks as we speak which will focus on tree identification and as many fun stories as I can add in there.
Tree Soaking Trivia
Don’t forget that this weekend, May 4, I’m putting on a Tree Soaking Trivia night with my good friend Dan Gleason! It’s going to be a fabulously good time, and we’ll be giving away prizes and even a private tree walk with us! I truly can’t wait. It’ll be at Arbor Beer Lodge and will start at 6 pm. $10 entry, and the beer will run all night!
I hope to see you all there!
Science of Tap on May 28th at The Alberta Rose Theater!
Lastly, I’m going to be speaking at Science on Tap again this month! If you missed the last one, now’s your opportunity to snag a drink, sit and relax while I regale to you how trees build themselves. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and this time it’ll be at the Alberta Rose Theater in Portland, OR on Wednesday May 28th. I can’t tell tell you how excited I am to be there, it’s literally a dream come true for me. With our powers combined, I’m hoping we can sell the place out!!
Tickets are limited, so snag them quick. If it goes well, they may ask me to come back and do another talk about trees…

As always, thank you so much for your support. I’ve been getting excited about some upcoming projects and ideas, so things are just building and building!
The sequoia is wild. I had to zoom in to figure out where it started. Nice cover. Wish i was in the area to attend a class or walk!
I love the cover!!!
